As most of Dan Boren’s district (OK-02) is comprised of small towns and communities, Boren is a strong advocate for rural America. Elected to the Oklahoma House of Representatives at age 29, Boren began his career in public office fighting for the needs of rural Oklahomans. In Congress, Boren’s top priorities are job creation, improving education and rural health care, and making America’s main streets more conducive to economic growth.
Since taking office, Boren has worked to improve the countless rural communities that have suffered job loss due to the outsourcing of rural America’s industrial manufacturing base. Boren believes that job growth and a strengthened economy are essential to not only improving the rural way of life in America, but also preserving rural culture and values.
Only six months into his first term, Boren has supported and introduced a number of initiatives to create jobs and help small businesses succeed. Recognizing the demands of the new global marketplace, Boren is working to expand tax credits for small businesses in rural communities experiencing population loss and low job growth rates.
In the House of Representatives, Boren is also fighting to make rural communities more livable by declaring war on the scourge of methamphetamines that is sweeping across the rural Midwest. Leading the battle against meth and related crime, Boren has introduced federal legislation to nationalize the highly successful Oklahoma anti-meth law.
Rep. Boren also believes that an important part of America’s rural heritage is conservation. Boren is a proud member of groups like Ducks Unlimited and the National Wild Turkey Federation – groups that are committed to responsible conservation practices. As an avid hunter and sportsman, Boren works to fulfill his commitment to ensuring the rights of other American’s to enjoy the outdoors.
Inspired to politics as a youth, Rep. Boren’s Democratic roots in public service go back several generations. His father, David Boren, served as Governor of Oklahoma and later as U.S. Senator before retiring from the Senate in 1994. His grandfather, Lyle H. Boren, represented southeastern Oklahomans in the U.S. Congress from 1937-47. Carrying on his family’s tradition of excellent public service, Dan Boren serves by the values instilled him at a young age – values of faith, family, hard work, and personal responsibility. Boren and his fiancée Andrea Heupel plan to marry later this month in Oklahoma.
