The new, 18,000-square-foot library stands on the site of the former Department of Motor Vehicles building on Bancroft Parkway, and is located at 2020 West 9th Street in Wilmington.  It replaces the former library which had served Wilmington for more than 75 years from a converted row home.  The $8.5 million project is the result of a partnership between New Castle County, the State of Delaware, the City of Wilmington, the Woodlawn Trustees, and the local community.

Hockessin, DENew Castle County Executive Chris Coons today joined State Senator Patricia Blevins, State Representative Roger Roy, and members of County Council in announcing the temporary relocation of the Hockessin Library and plans for its renovation and expansion.

The Hockessin Library will close on December 31, 2006, and re-open at its temporary home on January 16, 2007, in the Community Activity Center at the Hockessin P.A.L Center.  The temporary library at 7259 Lancaster Pike in Hockessin is approximately one-half mile from its current location.

“The Hockessin Library is not just a place to do research and check-out reading materials, but a community center that offers a variety of programs for both children and adults,” said County Executive Coons.  “I would like to thank Senator Blevins and Representative Roy for their efforts to obtain $3.5 million in Public Library Construction Act Funds from the State of Delaware towards this project.  Without their help, this renovation and expansion would not be possible.”

New Castle County Registers More than 35,300 Rentals,

Announces Start of Random Inspections

New Castle, DEToday, New Castle County Executive Chris Coons congratulated the Department of Land Use for successfully registering more than 35,000 rental housing units under the county’s Rental Housing Code.  The county spent a year contacting owners and registering rental units pursuant to the new code provision, which took effect in 2005.

New Castle County’s rental housing code, adopted by County Council in June 2005, requires registration of properties, creates a framework for inspections, clarifies the roles and responsibilities of property owners and tenants, and provides tenants with a free handbook explaining those roles.  The free property registration required by the code provides the county with a comprehensive list of rental units and contact information that will assist public safety officials during an emergency.
