Mrs. Laura Bush, honorary chair of the Preserve America initiative, led a national Preserve America Summit October 18-20, 2006, in New Orleans, Louisiana, marking the 40th anniversary of the passage of the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966. The Advisory Council on Historic Preservation was a partner and served as Summit coordinator.

U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Receives ACHP Award for Federal Preserve America Accomplishment
At the fall business meeting of the Advisory Council on Historic Preservation in Washington, DC November 9, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service received the Advisory Council on Historic Preservation’s Award for Federal Preserve America Accomplishment. The ACHP honored the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation for its innovative new grant program to create and improve interpretive, educational, and visitor experiences on the nation’s nearly 100 million acres of federal wildlife refuge property. Internal Revenue Service Wins Chairman’s Award for Federal Achievement in Historic Preservation
The Internal Revenue Service received the Advisory Council on Historic Preservation Chairman’s Award for Federal Achievement in Historic Preservation for its outstanding work in saving historic Redstone Castle in Redstone, Colorado at the ACHP’s fall business meeting November 9 in Washington, DC. IRS Commissioner Mark Everson and special agents John Harrison and Wayne Stockley were there to receive the award. Also receiving partnership commendations for their work in Redstone were Mark Rodman, executive director, Colorado Preservation Inc.; Paul Edmonson, general counsel, National Trust for Historic Preservation; Dan Corson, intergovernmental services director, Colorado Historical Society; and Darrell Munsell, head of Redstone Historical Society. National Preserve America Summit a Success in New Orleans
New Orleans—Mrs. Laura Bush, First Lady of the United States of America and Honorary Chair of Preserve America, led nearly 500 active participants through the Preserve America Summit Oct. 18-20, 2006 in New Orleans. Activities were centered around the historic U.S. Custom House, the Marriott New Orleans in the historic French Quarter, the Historic New Orleans Collection and the Old Ursuline Convent. September 19, 2006, WASHINGTON— Secretary of the Interior Dirk Kempthorne today announced the final round of Preserve America grants totaling more than $1.4 million. Close to $5 million has been distributed in 2006. Mrs. Laura Bush is the Honorary Chair of Preserve America, a White House initiative that encourages and supports community efforts to preserve and enjoy our nation’s cultural and natural heritage. ACHP’s BRAC Task Force posts Federal Preservation Program Notes
In 2005, ACHP established a Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC) Task Force to encourage preservation of historic properties affected by the Department of Defense’s BRAC process through assistance to participants in the Section 106 process, and to facilitate redevelopment outcomes that promote preservation, long-term stewardship of historic properties and the economic viability of communities.
