As America celebrates Independence Day this July 4th, we should remember that we would not be enjoying our freedom if it were not for the courage of our Founding Fathers who signed the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776. Of the 56, five were taken prisoner, 12 had their homes destroyed by the British, two lost their sons and nine died in the resulting War of Independence themselves. These men knew the cost of signing this simple document - and they were willing to pay it.
It is this commitment to America’s vision that has motivated those who have defended us throughout the years and those who defend us today. Independence Day gives us the opportunity to remember our valiant military personnel and security forces in Iraq and Afghanistan, thank them for their bravery and commitment, and hope that they will continue to defend America against the threats of this new century.
As we celebrate the 230th birthday of the United States of America, we should pause to reflect on the sacrifices made by our Founding Fathers and all of the patriots throughout our history. Most of all, we pray for our soldiers who are serving abroad and are fighting to preserve our way of life. Let us commit anew to the cause of freedom. Happy Birthday, America the Beautiful!
