On July 4th, 1776, our Founding Fathers declared their commitment to form a new government based on the principals of democracy. With each signature to the Declaration of Independence, the great dream for freedom and equality was strengthened- but not without cost. It would take six years of fighting and thousands of lost lives before the United States could truly take form. Had it not been for the courage, patriotism, and dreams of our Founding Fathers, we would not enjoy the freedoms we have today. As we pay tribute to the past, let us also remember that it is the same spirit and commitment to equality, opportunity, and freedom for all people that continues to motivate a new generation of Americans to defend our great country. Today, as we find ourselves in the midst of war, we should not forget that the thousands of soldiers stationed across the world are fighting for the same ideals of our forefathers: liberty, justice, and equality. Independence Day should serve as a national reminder that the freedoms we enjoy and hold so dear have come with a heavy price. On this Fourth of July, let us celebrate our great heritage and honor those men and women, past and present, who risked their lived to create, protect, and share the American dream. Happy 229th Birthday, America! |
