Washington D.C., June 8, 2006 - Congressman Michael Bilirakis (R-FL) today commended the efforts of the United States military in their latest victory over terror with the death of Abu Musab al-Zarqawi. Zarqawi was the most wanted man in Iraq for his leadership in the terrorist organization al Qaeda.
Zarqawi was responsible for countless acts of violence against Americans and Iraqis alike. Heralded by Osama bin Laden as "the prince of al Qaeda in Iraq," Zarqawi’s campaigns included car bombings, assassinations, suicide attacks, and beheadings of American hostages and other civilians. Zarqawi was a champion of terrorism and an enemy to freedom.
"The death of this murderer is a tremendous victory in the war on terror and an important step toward the eventual freedom and security of Iraq. Zarqawi was a madman determined to instill fear in Iraqis and inspire anti-democratic sentiment throughout the region. His death brings hope to those who desire peace and reassurance that American troops are making significant progress in the war on terror. Zarqawi will not become a martyr; rather, the images of his death will be an omen of the fates of bin Laden, al Qaeda, and other terrorists. I commend U.S. forces for their accomplishment and pray for their safety and well-being as they continue their mission."
