Washington D.C., July 29, 2005 - Chairman Mike Bilirakis (R-FL) today announced that the House of Representatives approved H.R. 3, the Transportation Equity Act: A Legacy for Users (TEA-LU), which provides $286.5 billion in federal highway, transit and road safety funding through 2009, by a vote of 412 to 8. Congressman Bilirakis secured funding for several transportation projects in his district in the bill.
Bilirakis said, “TEA-LU looks to the future by providing long term funding predictability and addressing vital transportation needs for our nation. I am pleased to be able to provide localities in my district with funding that enhances their long-term transportation planning.”
Bilirakis secured entire amount of funding for the following projects:
1) U.S. 19 Continuous right turn lanes in Pasco County - $5.76 million 2) U.S. Highway 19 Bayside Segment in Pinellas County - $1.6 million 3) Plant City Traffic Management System in Hillsborough County - $2.4 million 4) Temple Terrace Highway Modification in Hillsborough County - $1.6 million 5) Cross Creek Boulevard in Hillsborough County - $1.44 million
“We were able to make a difference in improving Florida's rate of return even though we were shooting for 95.5%. What’s important to remember is that for every $1 billion invested in transportation, some 42,500 jobs are created to bring opportunity to and spur growth in communities across the country. That amounts to over 14,000 jobs in Florida alone,” concluded Bilirakis.
