Washington D.C., September 7, 2005 - Chairman Mike Bilirakis (R-FL) issued the following statement today to those affected by the devastation caused by Hurricane Katrina.
“I want to express my sincere sympathy and sadness to those families and individuals affected by the most catastrophic natural disaster in recent U.S. history. It is unnerving to turn on the news and witness the destruction, chaos and tragedy these people are living. I offer my prayers to the thousands of victims which are suffering as a result of the devastating impact of this storm. I am praying for the survivors to have faith, stay strong and persevere through the trials they are experiencing now and those which are to come.
“I am happy to see several agencies, organizations, private companies and volunteers coordinating their efforts to alleviate the suffering and take action to help the victims by providing basic needs, relocating family members, providing temporary housing, preventing the spread of disease and sickness, and providing humanitarian and financial relief.
“The road to recovery will be long and arduous, but I know the great and generous people of this nation will be there to help their fellow citizens get back on their feet and start a new life wherever that may be. I am hopeful that through the efforts of the federal government, the private sector and ordinary citizens, we will be able to help rebuild not only the lives of those affected by Katrina, but also revitalize the ravaged cities destroyed in Katrina’s path.”
