Bilirakis to Chair VA Oversight and
Investigations Subcommittee

Washington D.C., February 9, 2005} - Full Veterans' Affairs Committee Chairman Steve Buyer and Representative Mike Bilirakis announced changes in the Veterans' Affairs Committee lineup for the 109th Congress. Bilirakis will remain Vice-Chairman of the full Committee and will assume chairmanship of the Oversight and Investigations Subcommittee.

"In his over twenty years of service on the Veterans' Affairs Committee, Mike Bilirakis has been a strong and steadfast advocate for our nation's veterans. His tenure on the Committee has been defined by his own service to this country and I look forward to continuing our work to give priority to those veterans who have sacrificed so much in the name of freedom," Buyer said today.

The Subcommittee on Oversight and Investigations reviews the benefits and the health care services that the federal government provides to eligible veterans and family members. It also oversees the programs and operations of the Department of Veterans Affairs, as well as those of other federal agencies that pertain to veterans.

"Having served on the Oversight Subcommittee for several years, I am pleased to have the opportunity to chair this important Subcommittee. As a veteran myself, I know firsthand that it isn't easy to wear the uniform of one's country. As Subcommittee Chairman, I will do my best to honor the many promises that we've made to veterans and their families through the years," said Bilirakis.

"I look forward to working with Chairman Buyer and the other members of the Veteran's Affairs Committee to ensure that our veterans receive the benefits they earned through their dedicated service to our country," Bilirakis concluded.

Bilirakis has been a Member of the Veterans' Affairs Committee since being elected in 1982. He served in the Air Force from 1951 to 1955.
