CONGRESSMAN DAVIS ANNOUNCES $140,000 IN

GRANTS FOR SUMTER COUNTY FIRE DEPARTMENTS

WASHINGTON  --  U.S. Representative Artur Davis (D-Birmingham) announced grants for the York, Cuba, Livingston, Gieger and Coatopa Fire Departments. The departments received Firefighters Grants offered by the Department of Homeland Security totaling nearly $140 thousand.

The Siloam Volunteer Fire Department received $85,500, the Kinterbrish Brunson Volunteer Fire Department received $11,505, the Bluffport Volunteer Fire Department received $15,025, the North Sumter Volunteer Fire Department received 133,000 while the Coatopa/Dug Hill Fire Department received $142,500.

Grants for the Kinterbish Brunson Volunteer Fire Department and Bluffport Volunteer Fire Department will be used for Operations and Firefighter Safety Programs which include training, fire extinguishing equipment, personal protective equipment, individual wellness and fitness, and modifications to fire stations and facilities. The Sumter Volunteer Fire Department, the Coatopa/Dug Hill Fire Department, and the Siloam Volunteer Fire Department will use their grants for the Firefighting Vehicles Acquisition Program, which includes pumpers, brush trucks, tankers/tenders, rescue vehicles, ambulances, quints, aerials, foam units, and fireboats.

“It is vital that we continue to invest in further empowering our homeland security infrastructure and its pre-existing capabilities,” Davis said. “These grants will aid the firefighters who selflessly protect Alabamians living in Sumter County.”

The Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program awards one-year grants directly to fire departments to support the nation's firefighters and the services they deliver. For the 2005 program, Congress appropriated $650 million in direct assistance to firefighters to improve the effectiveness of their operations. Up to this date, Rep. Davis has helped secure nearly $1 million in grants for fire departments in the 7th district in 2005.
