BIRMINGHAM - 7^TH District U.S. Representative Artur Davis (D-Birmingham) offered the following statement in support of former Jefferson County Commissioner Chris McNair. McNair is the father of Denise McNair who was one of the four little girls killed in the 1963 16^th Street Baptist Church bombing in Birmingham.

“The first time I thought about serving in Congress was the night that Chris McNair led the 7^th District primary in 1978.  He has been a treasured friend and will continue to be.  While it is not my place to second guess a jury’s verdict, that verdict does not undo 43 years of dignity since his daughter’s death.  It is my hope that Judge Propst will let this 80-year-old man go home and spare him and his family the cruelty of a federal jail cell.”
