CONGRESSMAN DAVIS HOSTS EDUCATION SUMMIT HIGHLIGHTING ALABAMA BEST PRACTICES

- 7TH District representative showcases Alabama classroom achievements -

BIRMINGHAM - With the reauthorization of the No Child Left Behind Act set for the 2007 legislative session in Washington, U.S. Representative Artur Davis (D-Birmingham) is hosting an event to highlight the successes in underserved communities throughout Alabama and to discuss changes that will help significantly improve the policy.

“Yes We Can: Telling Truths and Dispelling Myths about Education In America” is an education summit scheduled for November 1, 2006 at 4:00 p.m. at the The McWane Center in Birmingham.  Educators, administrators and interested parties from across the state will convene to discuss the trials and triumphs associated with our education system in Alabama.

Hosted in conjunction with The Education Trust and moderated by Congressman Davis, this event will examine the work of educators who have successfully used standards to improve teaching, motivate students and faculty, and raise achievement in public schools.

The panel discussion will include several of the brightest minds in education today from across our state and nation including Martha Barber, a premier reading coach with the Alabama Reading Initiative; Stephanie Robinson of The Education Trust; 2003 National Teacher of the Year Betsy Rogers and her principal Margie Curry of Brighton Middle School; and Sheritia Williams of Kinterbush Junior High School in the Black Belt.

Recent reports have shown that children in traditionally underserved communities can do well if they receive proper attention and resources.  This education summit will provide a chance for concerned voices in our community to hear about best practices and discuss implementing them throughout the state.
