WASHINGTON - U.S. Representative Artur Davis (D-Birmingham) will honor local heroes making a major impact during the 4th Annual Celebration of Excellence Awards reception. The event is scheduled from 6:30 p.m. - 8:30 p.m. at The City Museum of Washington at 801 K Street, NW.
Since arriving in office in 2003, Congressman Davis has hosted the Celebration of Excellence, an event developed to honor past, present and future community heroes endeavoring to improve the conditions of the people they serve. As in years past, the fourth installment of the Celebration recognizes a wide array of talent throughout the 7th Congressional District. This year’s honorees include:
o Trailblazer Award
Dr. Sandral Hullett – CEO, Jefferson County Health System
o Outstanding Achievement in Healthcare
Dr. Rosanne Cook – Grace Bussee Clinic, Camden
o Outstanding Achievement in Community Development
Mayor Walter Maddox – City of Tuscaloosa
o Lifetime Achievement in Education
Dr. Albert Sloan – President of Miles College (Posthumous Award)
Accepted by his wife Mrs. Emma Sloan
o Outstanding Student Achievement
Mariana Rodriguez – Auburn University
o Outstanding Student Achievement
Lucia Rodriguez – University of Alabama at Birmingham
Past honorees include American Idol winner Ruben Studdard, Judge U.W. Clemons, Herschel Hamilton, Sr., and Antwon Pettway of the University of Alabama.
“These individuals have demonstrated a tremendous capacity to serve there communities in numerous ways,” Davis said. “It is my honor to recognize their service through this program, and I look forward to assisting them with achieving their goals in the future.”
