CONGRESSMAN DAVIS ANNOUNCES $85,000 IN GRANTS FOR BIRMINGHAM AREA FIRE DEPARTMENTS

WASHINGTON  --  U.S. Representative Artur Davis (D-Birmingham) announced today grants for Birmingham and Fairfield Fire Departments.  The departments received Firefighters Grants offered by the Department of Homeland Security totaling over $85,000.

The Minor Heights Fire District received $56,007, while the Fairfield Fire Department received $29,538.  Grants for both departments will be used for Operations and Firefighter Safety Programs which include training, fire extinguishing equipment, personal protective equipment, individual wellness and fitness, and modifications to fire stations and facilities.

“It is vital that we continue to invest in further empowering our homeland security infrastructure and its pre-existing capabilities,” Davis said. “These grants will aid the firefighters who selflessly protect Alabamians in the Jefferson County area.”

The Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program awards one-year grants directly to fire departments to support the nation's firefighters and the services they deliver. For the 2005 program, Congress appropriated $650 million in direct assistance to firefighters to improve the effectiveness of their operations. Up to this date, Rep. Davis has helped secure nearly $1 million in grants for fire departments in the 7th district in 2005.
