Abercrombie supports House Memorial Resolution but regrets Republican 9-11 politics

Washington, DC -- U.S. Representative Neil Abercrombie voted for a resolution in the House of Representatives Wednesday evening that “continues to recognize September 11th

as a day to remember; mourns those who lost their lives; extends deepest sympathies to their families; honors the heroic actions of law enforcement personnel, state and local officials, and others who risked their lives; extends deepest gratitude to members of the armed forces serving at home and abroad in the global war on terror; vows that the United States will always remain vigilant; and reaffirms that the American people will never forget the tragedy of September 11, 2001.

“Politics has found no place in the discussion of remembering September 11th — until this year,” said Abercrombie, who has supported Congressional memorial resolutions in each of the last four years.  “Sadly, the Republican leadership insisted on putting language into this resolution that tries to pat themselves on the back for fighting terrorism by passing legislation.  But, they included a controversial measure on immigration that is so mired in disagreement within the Republican Party that they can’t pass it.”

“There should be no place for this kind of partisan stunt in a Congressional Resolution remembering the victims and heroes of 9-11,” Abercrombie said.  “It should always remain a hallowed day.  As I said Sunday evening during the Mayor’s Walk in Honolulu,  ‘It is required of us --- that we recognize not only what took place that day --- but contemplate and think clearly about what it's meaning is for us and for those who will come after.’ Politicizing September 11th dishonors and disrespects the loss that every American suffered that day.”
