Washington, DC -- Congressman Neil Abercrombie flashes the shaka sign as he takes an experimental hydrogen car for a spin around the U.S. Capitol grounds today.

According to car's manufacturer, the it has a top speed of 99 mph and a 168-249 mile range, depending on whether the fuel is stored in liquid or in compressed form.

The hydrogen which powers the car is manufactured from natural gas.

Abercrombie is a strong supporter of alternative energy sources such as hydrogen, natural gas, solar and ethanol.  He supports legislation to allow coastal states to permit natural gas extraction from adjacent Outer Continental Shelf areas.  He also authored provisions to promote production of ethanol from Hawaii-grown sugar and solar energy sources at Hawaii military installations.
