Washington, DC -- The House of Representatives today approved legislation to name the Post Office at 1271 North King Street, in Kapalama, after the late U.S. Senator Hiram L. Fong.

The bill, S. 2809, was introduced by Senator Daniel K. Akaka and passed the Senate on March 3rd.

It is identical to a companion bill introduced in the House by Congressman Neil Abercrombie.

The measure now goes to the White House, where President Bush is expected to sign it into law.

“Hiram Fong lived an extraordinary life,” said Abercrombie.  “He was truly a Hawaii original, and at the same time, he exemplified the qualities that transformed our state and allowed it to attain statehood.

“Born to immigrant parents of modest circumstances, Senator Fong worked hard and achieved great success in the fields of business and politics.  No matter how high he rose, he always remembered his roots and earned the support of Hawaii’s working families.  His devotion to public service culminated with his post-statehood election to the United States Senate, where he represented our state with dignity and honor.”

Senator Akaka said, “I am delighted that the House took such quick action in passing our bill honoring Senator Fong and grateful that our colleagues recognized the achievements of one of Hawaii’s own.”
