Abercrombie statement on independent

Ka Loko investigation

Washington, DC -- Congressman Neil Abercrombie praised yesterday’s announcement that five private attorneys have been named by a special legislative panel as finalists for the job of investigating the break of Ka Loko Dam on Kauai.

Abercrombie was the first to suggest the appointment of an independent investigator after the disaster occurred.

“I’m very pleased the legislators moved so quickly on this,” said Abercrombie. “The state may face lawsuits stemming from the breach, so it would be inappropriate to have a state official conduct the investigation.  I have every confidence in the ability and integrity of the State Attorney General, but he and his staff would find themselves in an impossible position if they had to both conduct the investigation and defend the state.  A special deputy attorney general will bring independence and credibility to the task.”

Hawaii State Attorney General Mark Bennett will evaluate the five finalists and select one of them to be the special deputy attorney general to investigate the dam breach.
