Abercrombie announces Kelsey Yamasaki
as APAICS intern

Washington, DC -- Congressman Neil Abercrombie announced today that Kelsey Yamasaki, a 2004 Roosevelt High School graduate, was selected as an Asian Pacific American Institute for Congressional Studies (APAICS) intern at the National Education Association in Washington.

APAICS is a non-profit, non-partisan, educational organization dedicated to increasing participation of individuals of Asian and Pacific Islander heritage at all levels of the political process. APAICS’ summer interns are drawn from the full range of APA communities across the nation.

APAICS offers its interns opportunities to meet with Members of Congress, meet with national AAPI community leaders, and participate in coalition events with the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation (CBCF) and the Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute (CHCI).  Hopefully, the experience will inspire them to stay active in political affairs during their professional careers, and to get other students involved as well. The internship lasts six weeks and started on June 5th.

Kelsey Yamasaki is interning at the National Education Association’s headquarters in Washington DC.  He is a rising junior at the University of Denver, majoring in Public Policy and Political Science.  His experience with the Hawaii Student Council reflects his interest in the political process. He was Chairman of Hawaii State Student Conference [2002- 2003]; Political Director of the Hawaii State Student Council/ Hawaii State Student Conference [2003-2004]; and an Intern at the Hawaii State Board of Education [Summer 2005].

Kelsey learned of the APAICS internship through Abercrombie’s congressional office.  Interested APA students are encouraged to contact his Honolulu office at (808) 541-2570 to learn more about this and other unique opportunities to broaden their horizons and gain valuable experience.
