Abercrombie statement on Alvin Shim

Washington, DC -- Congressman Neil Abercrombie issued the following statement today on the passing of Hawaii attorney Alvin Shim:

“I was deeply saddened to learn of the loss of Alvin Shim.  Nancie joins me in extending our deepest sympathy to his family and wide circle of friends.

“Alvin Shim was a stalwart of the Hawaii bar who devoted himself personally and professionally to our community.  He worked tirelessly to preserve the Aloha Spirit and promoted its inclusion in state law.  He was one of the founders of Alu Like and a leader in what became the Hawaiian Renaissance.

“Above all, Alvin Shim worked to make a Hawaii a fairer and more open society.  As  part of the 1954 revolution, Alvin played a central role in ensuring that people from every walk of life and every ethnic group had a voice in charting our islands’ destiny.  He helped draft legislation that made Hawaii one of the most progressive states in the nation, ensuring dignity for working men and women, opportunity for all, compassion for the disadvantaged, and hope for the future.

“Alvin Shim will be deeply missed.  He made Hawaii a better place, and we are all diminished by his passing.  He will be remembered with aloha by the many who knew and loved him, but his lasting memorial is a Hawaii where the values of equality and justice are cherished by all.”
