Medicare Prescription Drug Bill Cost Estimates:

During House debate on the Medicare prescription drug bill signed into law last December, Ways and Means Committee Democrats requested Administration estimates of projected costs of the legislation over the next 10 years. Those requests were denied. The actuary for the Medicare Trust Funds was directed not to provide his analysis to House Democratic conferees (including Congressman Rangel). The analysis would have shown the Administration was convinced the bill’s cost would be far in excess of the numbers it was using to promote the legislation.
