Washington, D.C. – House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi joined Democratic Caucus Chair James E. Clyburn and Members of the Democratic Rural Working Group today to unveil the Rural Working Group’s biofuels energy package that will secure America’s energy independence. Below are Pelosi’s remarks:

“Good morning. Thank you all for being here. This is an important day for us. This is a day when our Rural Working Group is rolling out the Democratic initiative to energize America: America’s farmers fueling America’s energy independence.

“Democrats have a real plan to energize the nation, calling on American farmers to fuel our energy independence. The energy challenges facing our nation are real, but Americans are ready to rise up and meet the challenge as they always do. The answer is right here at home. From corn in the Midwest, to soybeans in North Carolina, to sugar beets in Minnesota, we grow the crops that can be converted into the biofuels that power our cars. It is good for the environment, good for our economy, good for our farmers, and good for our national security.

“Our Democratic Rural Working Group has a plan that is American-owned and home-grown. It reduces our dependence on foreign oil, strengthens our national security, enhances the economy, and creates jobs in rural America and across the country.

“It is a comprehensive and innovative plan, and it fuels our economy while fueling our cars. We will increase the amount of biofuels sold in America; encourage independent and locally-owned facilities to produce biofuels so they can compete with Big Oil; increase the number of vehicles that run on ethanol and makes biofuels more readily available to consumers at the pump; and invest in research and development to improve the use of renewable energy.

“Democrats believe America should be energy independent, and we intend to do so within 10 years. With this plan, we will stop sending our energy dollars to the Middle East, and spend them in the Midwest and in our rural areas from coast to coast.”
