VA Data Privacy Breach

In May 2006, the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) announced that an employee’s laptop computer containing the names, Social Security numbers, and other personal identifying data had been stolen. On June 29, the VA and local Maryland law enforcement officials announced that the stolen laptop had been recovered. Forensic examination of the computer continues to determine whether the sensitive personal data of veterans has been accessed since the computer was stolen.
