Harris Introduces Breast Cancer Resolution
Measure Recognizes October as Awareness Month

Washington, Sep 20 -

WASHINGTON, D.C.- (September 20, 2006) – U.S. Representative Katherine Harris (R-FL) introduced a resolution to recognize October as National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. The measure, H.Con.Res. 476, which now has 89 co-sponsors, celebrates the more than two million breast cancer survivors in the United States and heralds the efforts of victims, volunteers, and professionals on the front line of the battle. In addition, the resolution points out the tireless work national and community organizations undertake to promote awareness about breast cancer, and urges support for programs to encourage women to perform self-examinations and receive annual mammograms.

"Advances in medicine and personal awareness allow breast cancer survivors to live longer, healthier lives", said Harris. "Still, we must make progress toward improving the quality of patients’ lives and the care they receive. This is a fight for people we know and love, and one we should never surrender".

Included in the resolution are the following statistics:

Breast Cancer is the most common cancer diagnosed in women in America;

Every three minutes a woman is diagnosed with breast cancer;

Over 13% of women born today will be diagnosed with breast cancer at some time in their lives;

One out of every eight women who live to 85 will develop breast cancer at some point in their lifetime.
