Harris Votes to Increase Border Security

Washington, Sep 14 -

U.S. Representative Katherine Harris (R-FL) today voted in favor of “The Secure Fence Act of 2006” (H.R. 6061), legislation that mandates operational control of all borders and ports through enhanced Border Patrol operations, physical barriers, and state-of-the-art technology along the southwest border, including reinforced fencing. Harris is also an original cosponsor of the bill.

“This measure is necessary to stop the flow of undocumented workers pouring into our country at an alarming rate”, said Harris. “Like an emergency room doctor who treats a cut by stopping the bleeding, we have to stop the “bleeding wound” of our borders that allows thousands of people to illegally enter the United States every day”.

The Secure Fence Act of 2006 will:

  • Provide more than 700 miles of two-layered reinforced fencing along the southwest border with prioritized placement at critical, highly populated areas and require an evaluation of infrastructure needs along the northern border;
  • Mandate that the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) maintain operational control over the entire border and deploy cameras. ground sensors, unmanned aerial vehicles, and integrated surveillance technology;
Require DHS grant authority to border personnel to disable fleeing vehicles, similar to the authority held by the United States Coast Guard for maritime vessels.
