Mentor Volunteer Fire & Rescue to Get New Pumper Truck

(Washington, DC) - Congressman Collin Peterson (D-Minn) announced that Mentor Volunteer Fire and Rescue has been awarded a vehicle acquisition grant for $156,750 from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program.

“These grant awards are crucial to our smaller fire departments that are in need of a new vehicle,” Peterson said. “The fire department and their volunteers who cover the Mentor area are a vital part of the public safety. Area residents are fortunate to have a strong department in place.”

The Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program awards one-year grants directly to fire departments to support local firefighters and the services they deliver. For the 2005 program, Congress appropriated $650 million in direct assistance to firefighters to improve their effectiveness and to establish or expand fire prevention programs throughout the United States.

Applicants have to demonstrate financial need and articulate the benefits to be derived from the grant funds in their applications.
