HUD grant will help Shelter House, Inc. move forward with new facility

(WASHINGTON, DC) - U.S. Rep. Collin Peterson (D-Minn) announced today that Shelter House, Inc., a haven for victims of domestic abuse in Willmar, has been awarded a grant of $186,394 from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development for construction of a new facility.

“When I first met Shelter House Executive Director, Connie Schmoll, she told me about the important services they provide to women and children, and that they were losing their lease and were in dire need of assistance,” Peterson said. “They’ve been working hard to raise money for this new facility and I’m pleased to have helped them move this project forward.”

The new facility will be twice as large as their current facility, with space for 16 beds instead of eight, and will be accessible for the disabled. Shelter House, Inc., provides emergency shelter for battered women and children. Shelter House, Inc. assists domestic abuse survivors with support, advocacy, intervention, and resources.

Shelter House has been in existence for 25 years, serves an 18 county area in Southwestern Minnesota, and offers the only residential shelter for victims of domestic abuse in Kandiyohi, Chippewa, Meeker, Swift, Lac qui Parle and Renville Counties.
