Veterans Access to Health Care Act
Congressman Brown received a letter in 2005 from a constituent whose husband’s leukemia is related to his exposure to Agent Orange in Vietnam.
She drives him to the Veterans Administration hospital for care – 75 miles round-trip. However, the VA travel reimbursement does not cover their costs.
A veteran cannot be reimbursed for mileage until he or she makes three round trips for treatment in a month. On the fourth trip, eligible veterans are reimbursed at only 11˘ per mile.
Congressman Brown has introduced legislation to help veterans by updating this important benefit. The Veterans Access to Health Care Act would eliminate the deductible, so that veterans would be reimbursed for their first trip to the doctor. It would also raise the reimbursement rate to 48.5˘ per mile – the same rate used when reimbursing Members of Congress for official travel.
Every American is indebted to our troops for the sacrifices they make for our country. The Veterans Access to Health Care Act is a common-sense reform that would allow us to better meet the needs of these patriotic Americans.
