Ohio's 13th District
Ohio’s 13th District encompasses the cities of Akron, Elyria, and Lorain. Small, large, rural and urban, the communities in Lorain, Summit, Cuyahoga, and Medina counties include the manufacturing strength and growing technology and health care industries of Northeast Ohio.

Lorain County is the district’s manufacturing center, including large production plants for steel, medical devices, and automobiles. In addition to manufacturing jobs, residents of Lorain County are seeing increased numbers of small businesses and the emergence of innovative community-based organizations. Lorain County Community College (LCCC), ranked as Ohio’s top-performing two-year college by the state’s Board of Regents, has forged partnerships with area businesses and educational groups. The respected publication Crain’s Cleveland Business recognized LCCC for “crusading to change the type of jobs found locally” by promoting the development of a campus-based center to train high-tech workers and assist computer-oriented entrepreneurs, including the Great Lakes Incubator for Developing Enterprises.

Akron is one of America’s great industrial cities and an hub of technological innovation. National Journal calls Akron the polymer center of the Americas. Because of Akron’s prominence in this sector, Ohio produces 80% of the nation’s polymer research and supports a $22 billion polymer industry. The University of Akron’s (UA) polymer science and polymer engineering program is ranked second in the nation and features a NASA-supported nanotechnology initiative. The National Science Foundation has awarded UA’s internationally recognized program more than $8 million for polymer-related research projects.

The district also includes the growing and established communities of Brecksville, Broadview Heights, North Royalton, and most of Strongsville in Cuyahoga County. The Medina County portion of the district consists of its largest city, Brunswick, and the townships of Brunswick Hills, Hinckley, and Liverpool.

The 13th District also includes some of the state’s leading health care providers, including the SUMMA Health Systems of Akron, the Akron Children’s Hospital, and St. Joseph Community Health Center, which has earned national recognition as a model for community resource centers that are equipped to meet critical health care and social service needs in low-income at-risk communities. Brecksville, located in Cuyahoga County, is home to a Veterans Hospital.

Sports and entertainment enthusiasts would be right at home in the 13th District. Akron is home to the Akron Aeros, the Cleveland Indians’ AA Farm Team, the University of Akron Zips sports program, and is home to the All-American Soap Box Derby. Art and music lovers have the Akron Art Museum, the Akron Symphony, the Ohio Ballet, which is based in Akron, and the Blossom Music Center based in Cuyahoga Falls. Outdoor activities range from the shores of Lake Erie in Lorain to the trails of the Cuyahoga Valley National Park.
