In 1979 Congress established the Congressional Award program. The program is a partnership between Congress and the private sector which recognizes outstanding achievements by young people between the ages of 14 and 23. To earn the Award, participants must set and achieve goals in four program areas: voluntary public service, personal development, physical fitness and expedition/exploration.
This past April 13 Missouri residents received Congressional Awards in a statewide ceremony. Congressman Lacy Clay and I presented these achievers with Congressional Gold, Silver, and Bronze Medals.
Their work exemplifies the cornerstones of the Congressional Award: service to others, initiative, and achievement. In June, seven students from Missouri traveled to Washington, DC to receive their Gold Medal in a national ceremony.
