More Competition And Greater Consumer Choice Why I Voted For The Cope Act Of 2006 By Congressman Charles B. Rangel
- WASHINGTON - The Communications, Opportunity, Promotion, and Enhancement Act of 2006, better known as the COPE Act, recently passed in the House 321-101.  This was a difficult vote for me, but one that I was ultimately persuaded would benefit consumers by increasing competition and choice.  I strongly supported the concept of "net neutrality" which was introduced in an amendment offered by Representative Edward Markey, the ranking Democrat on the House Subcommittee on Telecommunications and the Internet.  The aim of the amendment was to protect and preserve consumers’ access to Internet content and the services of their choice. ....more

Native American Tribal Contributions To Rangel Political Committees Jan. 1, 1997 - Dec. 29, 2005
- WASHINGTON - In response to Congressman Rangel's long-time advocacy on behalf of Native American sovereignty, since 1997 alone at least 18 Native American tribes have contributed to the Congressman's political committees.  Two of the tribes (highlighted below), mentioned in connection with lobbyist Jack Abramoff, accounted for 22 percent of the donations.  The Congressman has never met Mr. Abramoff and has no reason to believe that the lobbyist had anything to do with contributions to his political committees by Native Americans. ....more

- WASHINGTON - The New York City Department of Education, in a letter sent just before Christmas, effectively terminated the Boys Choir of Harlem for a long list of administrative and bureaucratic sins allegedly committed by the leadership of the Boys Choir.  I stand today with the leadership of the Boys Choir of Harlem to say "for shame" and to call for the reversal of this mean spirited decision that will deny the young members of the Boys Choir the opportunity to continue to enjoy their extraordinary educational experience when school begins next week.  The young men of the Boys Choir of Harlem were not so naughty as to deserve this placing of coals in their Christmas stockings. Justice Delayed, But Justice Finally Served
- WASHINGTON - Exactly 41 years after the brutal murders of James Chaney, Andrew Goodman, and Michael Schwerner, justice has finally been served in Mississippi. I welcome the verdict of the Mississippi jury that found Edgar Ray Killen guilty of three counts of manslaughter in the deaths of these three civil rights activists. While murder convictions would have been preferred in this case, Mississippi has taken an important step in race relations by finally convicting Killen of the crimes he proudly and publicly took credit for, but was not charged in a Mississippi that would not recognize the killings of African-Americans or those who supported their cause as a crime. ....more

Iraq War Anniversary: Silence Is The Worst Failure
- WASHINGTON, March 22, 2005 -- As we reflect on the second anniversary of the war in Iraq, I am struck most by the fact that so few people have focused on the 1,500 young Americans killed and more than 11,000 maimed.  The 20,000 GI's wounded in non-combat incidents--most of them seriously--are not even counted in public casualty reports.
