BLUE DOGS PUSH FOR ADOPTION OF MCCAIN ANTI-TORTURE MEASURE |

WASHINGTON D.C.- The Blue Dog Coalition has endorsed the Interrogation Procedures Act of 2005, H.R. 3985, authored by Blue Dog Rep. Jane Harman (CA). Additionally, Rep. Mike Thompson (CA) authored a Blue Dog letter urging the inclusion of the McCain anti-torture amendment in the FY2006 Defense Department Appropriations conference report. Rep. Harman’s bipartisan legislation prohibits cruel, inhuman, and degrading treatment of individuals in the custody of the “Our troops and intelligence personnel have been forced to operate in a ‘fog of law’ – a patchwork of post 9/11 legal memos and policies that appeared to have condoned cruel, inhuman, and degrading treatment,” said Rep. Harman. “This legislation would empower agents in the field and clarify the rules governing interrogations so that there can be no doubt what conduct is permitted.” Additionally, thirty-three Blue Dogs sent a letter on Wednesday, November 16th to Defense Appropriations Subcommittee Chairman Bill Young and Ranking Member John Murtha urging them to include the McCain anti-torture amendment in the FY2006 Defense Department Appropriations conference report. Blue Dog Rep. Mike Thompson (CA), a “America must hold itself to a higher standard and lead by example,” said Thompson. “As such, Congress has the responsibility to adopt tough anti-torture measures, whether it be the McCain amendment or Rep.
