WALSH SUCCESSFUL IN FIRST STEP TO ADDRESS LIMESTONE CREEK FLOODING IN FAYETTEVILLE

(Syracuse, New York)- Congressman Jim Walsh today announced that the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has completed its Initial Evaluation Report for the Limestone Creek flood control project in the Village of Fayetteville.  Walsh secured $36,000 in FY '06 funding to complete the cost/benefit report, which is the first step in committing any additional federal resources to fix the problem.

"I'm pleased the Army Corps has determined that our Limestone Creek flood control project meets appropriate guidelines for federal investment," said Walsh.  "The next step is to complete a feasibility study and construction plan to determine what exactly can and should be done to protect area homes and businesses from rising water."

Walsh currently has $75,000 in additional funding pending in the FY '07 Energy and Water Appropriations bill to enable the Army Corps to continue on the effort.  If the funds are made available, the Corps will prepare a detailed Project Management Plan and Feasibility Cost Share Agreement with the project's non-Federal partner, the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation.  The Village of Fayetteville is the project's primary customer and stakeholder.
"The Village is pleased not only that Congressman Walsh has made Limestone Creek flood remediation his priority, but that he's advanced the effort through the Army Corps," said Mayor Mark Olson.  "Thanks to the Congressman, this project will soon be a reality.  The Village of Fayetteville looks forward to the day when flooding no longer affects our residents and local businesses in the lower village."
FY '07 Appropriations should be finalized later this year.
