CITY SCHOOL 7TH GRADERS TO RECEIVE OVER
$8.25 MILLION IN FEDERAL SUPPORT
SU's GEAR-UP Program Funded to Work with City Students Through Graduation

(Syracuse, New York)- Congressman Jim Walsh today announced that Syracuse University's GEAR-UP program has been selected for funding in the amount of $1.376 million per year for up to six years.  The program will work with Syracuse City School District students entering the 7th grade this week.

"The GEAR-UP program is but another effort by the federal government to support local education needs," said Walsh.  "This funding will impact 1,800 Syracuse City School students as they progress through junior and senior high school.  Syracuse GEAR-UP partners should be very proud of their strong proposal deemed worthy of multi-year federal funding."

GEAR-UP is a discretionary grant program through the U.S. Department of Education designed to increase the number of low-income students who are prepared to enter and succeed in postsecondary education.  The program provides grants to states and partnerships to provide services at high-poverty middle and high schools.  Grantees serve an entire cohort of students beginning no later than the seventh grade and follow the cohort through high school.

Syracuse GEAR-UP, a collaborative effort between Syracuse University and the Syracuse City School District, is a program designed to increase the graduation rate and college attendance of students from sixteen schools in Syracuse. The program will follow this year's seventh grade students at eleven middle schools including:  Levy, Clary, Danforth, Blodgett, Shea, Frazer, Grant, Huntington, Beard, Roberts and Lincoln.  Syracuse Gear Up will follow the students through their time in high school at Corcoran, Henninger, Fowler, Nottingham and Central Technical High School (CT).

Syracuse GEAR-UP is also aligned with community agencies and business partnerships. The community agencies have been provided technology for these sites to be used by GEAR-UP students and families for study and career/college search.  Business partnerships include SUNY Upstate Medical University, LeMoyne College, Onondaga Community College and Partners for Education and Business, a consortium of over 100 local employers in Central New York, all serving students in their college and career search.
