(Syracuse, New York)- Congressman Jim Walsh today announced the awarding $31,000 in United States Justice Department funding to various 25th District law enforcement agencies for the outfitting of local police officers with new bullet-resistant vests.
"This is great news for our local police officers and sheriff's deputies," Walsh said. "The men and women safeguarding our children and community deserve the best equipment available. This funding helps purchase 180 new bullet-resistant vests, ensuring our protectors remain safe on the job."
One of the largest quantities of vests, 105, will be purchased by Onondaga County for the Sheriff's Department, headed by Kevin E. Walsh.
"This is a great contribution to the safety of the deputies who perform dangerous duties on a daily basis," said Sheriff Walsh.
The Bulletproof Vest Partnership (BVP) Grant Act of 1998 was designed to provide critical resources to state and local law enforcement by funding up to 50 percent of the cost of each vest purchased or replaced. The Bulletproof Vest Partnership Act was most recently reauthorized in 2000.
A list of local law enforcement jurisdictions within New York's 25th Congressional District that will receive funding under the current BVP grant announcement are:
