(Syracuse, New York)- Congressman Jim Walsh today announced the released of $80 million in contingency Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) funding by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). New York State was allotted an additional $25.8 million, which it received on Tuesday.
"This money will have a direct impact for families struggling with rising energy costs during the upcoming winter," said Walsh.
The $80 million is on top of over $3 billion in LIHEAP funding allocated for the program earlier this fiscal year. New York State previously received over $356 million in LIHEAP funding from the federal government. With Tuesday's release, New York's FY 2006 total now tops $382 million.
Walsh holds a senior position on the House Appropriations Labor-HHS-Education Subcommittee with direct fiscal oversight over the Department of Health and Human Services and its LIHEAP program.
Individuals interested in applying for LIHEAP assistance should contact their County Office of Social Services or the New York State Office of Temporary and Disability Assistance at 1-800-342-3009 for information. More information can be found online at www.otda.state.ny.us/otda/heap/default.htm.
