REP. WALSH, ENVIRONMENTAL GROUPS TO PUSH FOR
GREAT LAKES RESTORATION

Media Event Wednesday, August 23rd at 11:30 a.m. at Shumway Marina in Irondequoit

(Irondequoit, New York)- Congressman Jim Walsh will join representatives from the state's leading conservation organizations at a media event on Wednesday, August 23rd at 11:30 a.m. at Shumway Marine* in Irondequoit to announce his support for new federal legislation to restore the Great Lakes.

Joined by representatives of Audubon New York, Citizens Campaign for the Environment, Environmental Advocates of New York, and Great Lakes United, Congressman Walsh will announce his decision to co-sponsor H.R. 5100, the Great Lakes Collaboration Implementation Act. 

The legislation is a comprehensive plan to stop the introduction and spread of aquatic invasive species, prevent Asian carp from entering the Great Lakes, restore fish and wildlife habitat, prevent sewage contamination, clean up contaminated sediment, phase out mercury in products, and coordinate and improve Great Lakes programming.

Walsh has been a leader in Lake Ontario and watershed protection issues and previously helped sponsor the Lake Ontario Coastal Initiative by the Center for Environmental Information (CEI) at SUNY Brockport.  In October 2004, CEI presented Walsh with its "Environmental Leadership Award" at its 30th Anniversary Community Salute to the Environment.

Walsh's 25th Congressional District boasts over 100 miles of Lake Ontario shoreline from the Wayne / Oswego County line in Fair Haven to the Genesee River in Rochester.

* Shumway Marine is located at the mouth of the Genesee River at 40 Marina Drive in the Town of Irondequoit.  Marina Drive is off Pattonwood Drive, west of its intersection with St. Paul Boulevard and one block east of the O'Rorke Bridge.  The event will be staged riverside at Schooner's Restaurant within the marina complex.
