WALSH: USDA RURAL DEVELOPMENT APPROVES $2 MILLION LOAN FOR WOLCOTT VILLAGE SEWER SYSTEM

(Wolcott, New York)- Congressman Jim Walsh today announced that the U.S. Department of Agriculture Rural Development has approved the Village of Wolcott's application for a $2 million loan to tie the village's existing sewer system into the new Red Creek Regional Wastewater Treatment Facility currently under construction by the Wayne County Water and Sewer Authority.

"This funding will enable the Village of Wolcott to meet stricter environmental regulations pertaining to wastewater treatment and the release of its effluent," said Walsh.  "It will negate the Village's upcoming need to heavily invest in the upgrading of its existing treatment facility and provide for a cleaner Port Bay."

The Village of Wolcott is currently considering the development and construction of a wastewater conveyance system from the village to the newly constructed Red Creek plant.  The Village's current wastewater treatment plant was constructed in 1974, and many of its components are at the end of their useful life, in need of repairs, or do not meet current design standards.  The Village plant releases into Port Bay, a popular embayment on the Lake Ontario shoreline.

Costs to the Village to tie into the new Red Creek facility have been estimated at one-half or less the cost of upgrading its current facility.  When completed, the Red Creek plant will meet the highest standards set by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation.  Its discharge will be released into Red Creek and surrounding wetlands.
"USDA Rural Development is pleased to support Wolcott's new wastewater system," said Scott Collins, Acting State Director for Rural Development in New York. "The new system will replace an aging plant that no longer meets current design standards and will provide improved service for more than 1,700 village residents.  I thank Congressman Walsh for his strong, personal support of this and other Rural Development projects."
The Red Creek facility was designed with capacity to serve the Village of Red Creek, Village of Wolcott, Village of Fair Haven (including lakefront residences on Little Sodus Bay), Town of Wolcott (including lakefront residences on Port Bay and Blind Sodus Bay), Town of Sterling, Town of Rose, and the New York State Department of Corrections Facility in Butler.
