WALSH: HOUSE SET TO RESTORE CDBG FUNDING LEVELS
Local Congressman Continues Effort to Fight Bush Proposal To Trim Important Funding

(Washington D.C.)- Congressman Jim Walsh said today that he is confident the House Appropriations Committee will restore CDBG funding to last year's levels during the Committee's markup of the FY 2007 Transportation/Treasury/HUD/Judiciary Appropriations Bill scheduled for next week.

President Bush's proposed budget had included a 20% cut in the Department of Housing and Urban Development's Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) program.  Congress appropriated $3.7 billion for the CDBG formula-based grant program in FY '06.

"Congress can get a handle on controlling federal spending while still supporting important domestic federal programs like CDBG," said Walsh.  "Discussions among my Appropriations colleagues give me great confidence that this funding will be formally restored.  At the same time, Congress is on track to cut the federal budget deficit in half by fiscal year 2009 with the budget blueprint it passed this week."

Late Wednesday night, the House of Representatives passed its FY '07 budget blueprint that provides for America's priorities and gives our troops the resources they need to fight and win the war on terror.  In addition, the blueprint holds the line on non-military, non-security discretionary spending, promoting fiscal discipline.

Walsh is a senior member of the House Appropriations Committee and chairman of the panel's third largest subcommittee.
