(Washington D.C.)- Congressman Jim Walsh today announced the release $21.8 million in U.S. Department of Energy funding for weatherization programs in New York State. The funds are part of $140.3 million recently released to thirty-one states nationwide to make energy efficiency improvements in homes of low-income families.
"This funding is important to area low-income families struggling to pay high home heating bills," said Walsh. "Part of $243 million budgeted nationwide this year, these monies will be used to make needed improvements for greater energy efficiency in the aging homes of qualified families."
For every dollar spent, weatherization returns $1.53 in energy savings over the life of the measures. After a complete energy audit in performed to identify the most cost-effective measures for each home, weatherization improvements typically include adding insulation, reducing air infiltration, servicing heating and cooling systems, replacing doors and windows, and providing health and safety diagnostic services. Other benefits of weatherization include increased housing affordability, increased property values, job creation, lower owner and renter turnover, and reduced fire risks.
