Pryor, Ross Urge Bush to Use Executive Order to Provide Homes for Hurricane Evacuees
President Expresses Concern about Empty Manufactured Homes

(Washington, D.C.)  Senator Mark Pryor and U.S. Rep. Mike Ross (AR-04) today said they are pleased to learn that President Bush is concerned about the 10,477 manufactured homes sitting in Hope, Arkansas and called on him to exercise an Executive Order to allow these homes to be used by hurricane evacuees in Mississippi and Louisiana.  Their letter follows President Bush's announcement this morning that he called on Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff to address the fully furnished, unoccupied and brand new manufactured homes in Hope that were purchased by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) for hurricane evacuees who lost their homes and everything they own nearly seven months ago.

Pryor and Ross contend that waiving the FEMA regulation which prevents these manufactured homes from being sent to flood plain areas would mirror legislation they introduced earlier this month in the Senate and House of Representatives.  They added, however, that an Executive Order waiving the FEMA restriction could have the homes moving to the Gulf Coast in a matter of days, as opposed to the lengthy process of passing legislation.
