Local Student, Katie Watson, Completes Congressional

Internship in Washington, D.C.

(Washington, D.C.) Fourth District Rep. Mike Ross (AR-04) today commended local student, Katie Watson of Hot Springs, for successfully completing the first session of his Washington, D.C., congressional internship program.

Throughout Ross’s five-week summer internship program, Watson attended committee hearings and legislative briefings, assisted members of the congressional staff on various projects, and gave Fourth District constituents tours of the United States Capitol.  Ross’s internship program provides young and upcoming leaders the opportunity to understand the inner-workings of the federal government first hand.

“My internship program in Washington, D.C. is designed to expose students to our federal government and the legislative process, experiences that simply cannot be learned in a classroom,” said Ross.  “Congressional internships provide a unique setting for student leaders to not only understand the importance of public service, but also to work on behalf of the people of Arkansas’s Fourth Congressional District.  I am proud of Katie for all of her hard work this summer and I wish her success in all of her future endeavors.”

Katie Watson, a Hot Springs native, is a senior at the University of Arkansas, pursuing a Bachelor of Science degree in Public Administration with minors in Political Science and Music.  Katie is the Head Drum Major for the Sudler Trophy winning Razorback Marching Band, Vice President of Ritual for Sigma Alpha Iota- the University’s professional music fraternity, and is an active volunteer for the Democratic Party. She is the daughter of Bill and Delania Watson and is engaged to James Walden of Benton.  After graduation in May of 2007, Katie plans to pursue a Master’s Degree in Public Administration.

Watson was chosen to participate in Ross’s summer internship program through a selection process where she competed with other young people from across the district.  More information on Congressman Ross’s internship program is available at www.house.gov/ross or by calling (800) 223-2220.
