MIKE'S WEEKLY MESSAGE

Funding for Arkansas Transportation
 Project Approved

On Friday, the House of Representatives gave final approval to funding for several important Arkansas transportation projects as we passed the conference report to the fiscal year 2002 Transportation Appropriations bill.

Among the funding included in this bill are $7 million for construction of Interstate 49 along Highway 71 south of Texarkana, $4 million for the extension of Interstate 530 south of Pine Bluff to connect with the planned Interstate 69, and $7.5 million to build the I-69 Great River Bridge over the Mississippi River near Arkansas City.

I am pleased that we were able to secure the funds necessary to advance these highway projects, which are vital to the future economy of South Arkansas as well as our nation’s infrastructure needs.  This funding will not only help bring better roads to the Fourth District, but more importantly, provide jobs and opportunity to our area.

I am also pleased that the bill continues full funding for the Essential Air Service program, which will allow the airport in Hot Springs to continue to receive needed support from this important program.  Earlier this year, the Administration proposed tightening requirements for the EAS program, which would have eliminated support for certain smaller airports including the airport in Hot Springs.

With the Senate expected to pass this measure early this week, I look forward to the President signing this important transportation funding into law very soon.

Celebrating the Joy of Thanksgiving

On Wednesday, November 21, 2001, U.S. Representative Mike Ross and his family helped deliver meals to seniors in Hot Springs with the Meals on Wheels of Garland County program. The program is administered by the Mercy Senior Care Department at St. Joseph's Mercy Health Center in conjunction with the Area Agency on Aging (AAA). A combination of Mercy Senior Care employees, AAA workers and volunteers deliver over 500 hot meals a day to seniors in Garland County who otherwise would not have access to a warm meal during the daytime. Funding for the program is provide through various federal, state, and local revenues and grants as well as private donations. Congressman Ross delivered meals to 57 homes on the program's western Hot Springs route. Ross' wife, Holly, daughter, Syndey Beth (13), and son, Alex (9), took turns accompanying the Congressman as he delivered each meal.

"This program provides such an invaluable service to many of our seniors by providing them with warm meals each day and looking after their well-being," Ross said. "The folks at Mercy Senior Care, the Area Agency on Aging, and the Garland County Senior Citizen Center really have their heart into this program, and I commend them for what they do. I will do all I can in Washington to make sure they and other Meals on Wheels programs get the funding they need to reach out to as many seniors as possible in our area."
