MIKE'S WEEKLY MESSAGE

Honoring our Veterans

"This week we as a nation exercised one of our fundamental freedoms in voting in the Midterm Election.  Whether it was a vote for your congressman, your alderman, or issues affecting your community, it was your vote to cast, and that is a precious thing.

"It may be a coincidence that Election Day falls so close to Veterans’ Day, but I think it provides a powerful reminder.

"On this Veterans’ Day Weekend, we must pause to remember those who have fought so hard, giving their time, their strength, and even their lives to protect our rights and freedoms like the one we exercised on Tuesday.  There is not one person among us who does not have a veteran in his or her life – whether it’s someone in our neighborhood, or even in our household.  I’d like to take this opportunity to thank our men and women in uniform who have served and defended our country so bravely.

"I’d also like to invite you to join in celebrating this Veterans’ Day.  Find out how your community is paying tribute to local veterans, and get involved.  Fly your flag at your home to show support for our troops still stationed overseas in the fight against terrorism.  But at the very least, seek out that father, grandfather, or neighbor who served in our armed forces, and simply say, 'Thank you.'"

Ross Announces $132,544 for Rural Fire Departments

PRESCOTT – Fourth District Rep. Mike Ross (D-Ark.) Thursday announced that the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s (FEMA) Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program has approved grant applications for Fire Operations and Firefighter Safety from the Ouachita Fire Department in Donaldson, Highway 15 South Fire Department in Pine Bluff, the Malvern Fire Department, and the Harrell Volunteer Fire Department.

“Our rural volunteer firefighters perform a vital service to residents throughout Arkansas,” Ross said.  “They confront new and changing life safety challenges every day.  These grants will help these departments provide training, personal protective equipment, and firefighting equipment for the volunteers so that they can continue to help keep our communities safe and come to the aid of neighbors and residents in times of disaster.”

Under the grant, FEMA has agreed to pay 90 percent of the total project costs submitted by each department in the grant application.  Funding released in this round is as follows:

· Ouachita Fire Department, $50,310
· Highway 15 South Fire Department, $47,912
· Malvern Fire Department, $11,691
· Harrell Fire Department, $22,631

Earlier this year a panel of more than 300 fire service personnel evaluated approximately 19,500 applications from across the United States. FEMA will distribute $360 million through approximately 5,500 grants before the end of 2002.  Grant recipients are being announced in batches, and future grant recipients will be posted as awards are made.
