MIKE'S WEEKLY MESSAGE

Providing Economic Relief for our Small Businesses

“As a small business owner with twelve employees back home, I understand the challenges faced by small businesses as a result of the September 11 terrorist attacks and the important role that small businesses can play in jumpstarting the economy.  That’s why as a member of the Small Business and Financial Services Committees, I am working on a number of fronts to help our small businesses.

“I, along with several of my colleagues, have written to House Speaker Dennis Hastert asking him to make sure that Congress does not overlook the needs of small businesses in this time of economic uncertainty.   I am currently a co-sponsor of two measures, the Small Business Emergency Relief Act and the Terrorist Disaster Relief for Small Businesses Act, which are designed to reach out to companies hurt economically by the attacks and give them immediate assistance through the Small Business Administration's Economic Disaster Loan Program.  I am optimistic that Congress will soon consider a legislative package that includes the needs of small businesses.

“The recent economic downturn, combined with the effects of the terrorist attacks, have caused many small businesses to suffer serious financial losses, particularly in travel- and tourist-related industries, and have caused job losses for small businesses to skyrocket.  The proposals I’ve supported would provide a necessary bridge between bankruptcy and survival for many small businesses struggling to manage this uncertain economic climate and help to stem the loss of jobs these companies provide to our local communities.”

Ross Honors Memory of Officer Nehamon Lyons

Washington, DC-- Thursday, on the one-month anniversary of the attack, Congressman Mike Ross attended a special memorial service at the Pentagon where the President, members of Congress, military and civilian leaders and others paid tribute to the victims and their families. Among the victims of the September 11 attack on the Pentagon was an officer from Pine Bluff, Petty Officer Nehamon Lyons IV. Many members of Officer Lyons’ family, including relatives from Arkansas and elsewhere, attended the service.Following the ceremony, Ross invited the family members of Officer Lyons to the nation’s capitol for a private ceremony where he presented them with a framed copy of a statement he submitted to the Congressional Record on October 4, 2001. Congressman Ross was joined by Senator Blanche Lincoln in presenting the United State flag which had been flown over the U.S. Capitol building in honor of Officer Lyons to the family. Senator Hutchinson and Congressmen Snyder and Berry were unable to attend; however, several staff members from their offices were present.
