MIKE'S WEEKLY MESSAGE

Unity Can Secure a Safer Nation

On September 11, 2001, this country witnessed a national tragedy that will never be forgotten.  Earlier this month, a bipartisan commission released a long awaited report detailing recommendations on possible ways to thwart future attacks on American soil.

The purpose of the 9/11 Commission was not to point fingers, but to seek answers.  The overall message of the commission’s findings can be summed up in a single word, unity.  Among the recommendations noted in the report, the commission suggests unification in strategic intelligence and operational planning, unifying the intelligence community with a new National Intelligence Director, and strengthening congressional oversight, the FBI and homeland defenders.

It is now the responsibility of the Congress to take these recommendations into careful consideration in an effort to bring about change.  With each day that passes, the United States becomes more vulnerable to attack.  The 9/11 Commission has provided us with solid evidence and sound suggestions, and we must act swiftly and responsibly if we are to protect this country from future acts of terror.

The American people must be allowed to feel safe again.  As your Member of Congress, I look forward to addressing the commission’s concerns with my colleagues, but more importantly, I look forward to the bright and safer future I am certain is in store for this great country.
