MIKE'S WEEKLY MESSAGE

A Time to Be United and Move Our Nation Forward

"Tuesday night, I was pleased to sit in the chamber of the House of Representatives in Washington as President Bush gave his State of the Union address to the nation.  This is not a time for politics as usual; this is a time to be united, to look to the future and move ahead to meet the many challenges facing our nation.

"Like President Bush, I agree that our first priority must be to win our war on terrorism.  With the support of Congress, the President and his Administration have shown strong leadership in waging the military campaign in Afghanistan, and I give him an ‘A+’ for his efforts in conducting this new war.  I especially commend our men in women in uniform for their courage and sacrifice in carrying out this most historic mission.  Their service to our country is greater than ours could ever be.

"We must stand united in honoring our commitments at home as well as abroad.  I applaud President Bush for proposing new resources for homeland security.  We will not win the war on terrorism or re-establish a strong economy if we do not make sure that our families can feel as safe and secure as they did before September 11th.  I am committed to continuing to work in a bipartisan way to ensure that happens.

"I am pleased that President Bush expressed his commitment to improving our economy and providing assistance to laid-off workers.  This is not an issue that should be about Democrats or Republicans.  This is about creating jobs and opportunities and helping our working families.  We must have a balanced approach to stimulating the economy—one that provides an immediate boost to the economy by extending unemployment and health insurance benefits to those displaced workers, many of whom find themselves out of work for the first time in their lives, and by providing incentives for small business to grow and create new jobs.   We should not, however, pass a measure in the name of economic stimulus that is designed to help only special interests.

"I also commend the President for highlighting the need to come together to provide prescription drug coverage for our seniors.  This issue is critical to our seniors, and it’s time for us to unite to help our seniors the way we have united in the war against terrorism.  However, while the President’s plan is a small step in the right direction, I believe it does not go far enough, and I urge him to support the bipartisan bill, which Congresswoman Jo Ann Emerson (R-MO) and I have introduced, the MEDS Act (HR 3626), that will provide a meaningful voluntary, but guaranteed Medicare prescription drug benefit for all senior citizens.

"Like the President, I believe that the state of our union is strong, and I look forward to working with him and my colleagues in Congress, both Democrats and Republicans, to move our nation forward as we address the many important issues facing the American people."
