Hefley works to honor law enforcement officers

(Washington, D.C.) — U.S. Rep. Joel Hefley, R-Colo., encourages Americans to honor law enforcement officers for the risks they take each day to keep communities across the nation safe.

Hefley introduced last week, H.Res. 788, legislation that expresses the support of the House of Representatives for Peace Officers Memorial Day.  The legislation also encourages Americans to recognize the work of law enforcement officers by observing the day through ceremonies and other activities.

“Law enforcement officers are on the front line every day protecting our communities,” said Hefley.  “They risk their lives so others may be safe.  I encourage people to thank their local law enforcement officers for the important work they do.”

Each year, the president is asked to issue a proclamation designating May 15 as Peace Officers Memorial Day to honor federal, state and local peace officers killed or disabled in the line of duty.

Peace Officers Memorial Day is a nation-wide event held during National Police Week, May 14-20.  The week includes several events in the Washington, D.C. area that allow officers to express pride in their profession and honor fallen colleagues.  Other events include a candlelight vigil and a wreath laying ceremony at the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial.  Nearly 40,000 law enforcement officers are expected to take part in the activities.

The bipartisan resolution has been referred to the House Committee on Government Reform.
