Congressional Forum to Examine Human, Financial & Global Standing Costs of the Continued Occupation of Iraq
September 19, 2006
WASHINGTON, D.C. - On Tuesday, September 26th, from 2:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m., U.S. Representative Lynn Woolsey (D-CA) will host a Congressional Forum examining the financial, military, and opportunity costs of the occupation of Iraq.  Woolsey will be joined by colleagues in the House, as well as two sets of panelists who will address the different aspects of the costs associated with the continued occupation.

Panel One:  Analysis of current conditions and realities on the ground in Iraq
 
-- Dr. Pillar (a 30 year veteran of the CIA, and currently a professor of Security Studies at Georgetown University) will address the escalating civil war and other realities on the ground in Iraq.
 
-- Gen. Odom (Currently a Senior Fellow with Hudson Institute who served under President Reagan as the Director of the National Security Agency) will address the importance of changing America’s strategic posture in the region, beginning with the urgent need to remove U.S. troops from Iraq

Panel Two:  Analysis and first-hand accounts of costs of Iraq occupation

-- Ms. Chloe O'Gara, (Director of Global Education Program, Save The Children) will discuss how the occupation has affected Iraqi children and families.
 
-- Ms. Anita Dancs, (Research Director, National Priorities Project) will highlight some of the urgent national priorities that have not been addressed, even while more than $300 billion has been spent in occupying Iraq.
 
-- Mr. Peter Laufer (author of Mission Rejected: U.S. Soldiers Who Say No to Iraq) will discuss the morale of troops serving in Iraq.
 
-- Tentative:  Adrian Atizado (Assistant National Legislative Director, Disabled American Veterans) will address the under-funded, and unmet needs of America’s veterans.
