Hoyer Statement on Elections in Iraq
WASHINGTON, DC – House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD-5) released the following statement today regarding the parliamentary elections taking place in Iraq tomorrow:
“Tomorrow’s elections in Iraq could mark an important turning point for both the Iraqi and American people.
“For the elections to be successful, it is critical that they are inclusive and that the Iraqi people vote in large numbers. This will help ensure the legitimacy of the results and provide the newly elected government with a strong foundation on which to build.
“However, successful elections are not the end of the story and only open a new chapter of hard work for the Iraqi people. The elected government will face great difficulties in assuming responsibility for Iraq's infrastructure, stability and security. It is incumbent on President Bush to lay out a clear plan for assisting the new government in meeting these challenges – something that he has failed to do over the past three years and his four recent speeches.
“The success of these elections and the new government’s ability to take responsibility for the country are key steps for enabling the redeployment of American troops.
“These elections are of such importance that I am sure that the entire world will join Americans in watching them closely and wishing the Iraqis good luck.”
